Baby Names and Meanings

Italian Baby Names

For Italians, their entire life revolves around their family. With family playing such an important role in their lives, there is nothing surprising about how choosing a name for the “newcomer” is an important and traditional experience for the parents and their families!

Most Italians are very devout Roman Catholics. In fact, they are so religious that many children are named after specific saints and celebrate not only their birthday; they also celebrate their “name day” which is the day of the feast for the particular saint that they are named after. Italian children may be given the name of a saint corresponding to the day that they were born; January 22nd is the name day for Domenico. Everyone who’s named Domenico would celebrate on this day! Some parents might name their children after saints whom they favor more.

Traditions are an extremely important part of family life. The grandparents are the ones who usually carry these traditions of sharing stories or even passing down family recipes. Since the grandparents are an integral part of the family tree, many children are named after their grandparents too.

Italian tradition has been good enough to get rid of the wrinkles in the process of choosing names for the new comes. An age old way is that the parent’s first son was named after his paternal grandfather and the first daughter will be given the name of her paternal grandmother. The second ones will be named after the maternal grandmother if it is a girl and after the maternal grand dad if it is a boy.

Popular names for a baby girl would be Arianna meaning “Holy,” Mia meaning “My,” Gianna which means “God is Gracious,” and Liliana which means “Lily.” Bianca is a fantastic name which might help give your daughter a “shining” personality. If you feel that your baby girl might bring a completely fresh sunrise to your life, name her “Zaira” which means “dawning.” A baby girl who seems to have a completely fresh aura about her should be named “Chiara” which means “light.” Mariella is another sweet sounding name which means “diminutive of Maria.”

Some of the best baby names for boys are Lucca (light), Matteo (Gift of God), Enzo (Conquering) and Santino (little saint). Another great name for a little tyke who you think should become powerful might be Vincenzo which means “conquering”; soon your little Vincenzo might turn out to be the next President!  Giancarlo is an interesting name which means “God’s gracious manly gift.” Xiomar is a unique name for a little boy who may turn out to be “famous in battle.”

As the “big day” approaches, you might be looking to carry on a traditional family name or maybe you want to pick a saint’s name; whatever it is, take time to look through plenty of names. Discuss them with your immediate family and close friends; they would be able to give you some great insight.

Importantly look at the name and the meaning! In Italians, a baby’s name can mean anything from a revered saint to maybe a specific place in Italy or even a popular flower.

Have fun picking an interesting Italian baby name!
